The board of doctors at Landspítali, or National Hospital of Iceland, have challenged the local authority to aim for a specified completion date of 2016 for the new hospital building, which will be located across the road from the old building on Hringbraut. It did not take very long for the board of doctors to come to an agreement on the date, according to an announcement from them.
For many years, the national hospital has been experiencing serious growing pains as the current building has been extended, yet does not satisfy space requirements. The main disadvantage of the current arrangement, however, is the location of the hospital on two main sites in Reykjavík, which means that staff and patients must frequently travel between the two buildings.
The report states the solution to the problem specifies a precondition of improving patient services, whilst securing efficient operation of the hospital. The site where the hospital will be located is currently a stretch of mostly brownfield land, although the BSÍ main bus terminal is located to the north of the site. A plan to construct a new transport terminal near the airport has also been proposed.
In the past few years, significant milestones in the operations planning for construction of the new hospital have been achieved. The board of doctors have requested the financial and healthcare authorities to carry on the good work which has already begun, and to aim for a completion date of 2016 for the project.
The current plans for the construction of the hospital and its internal layout can be found on the website of the Nýtt Háskólasjúkrahús við Hringbraut (in Icelandic).
